Gilroy – The Super Showdown II Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, the 10th in a series of charity events developed by the Gilroy Community Services Department, will be held at 10am Saturday Feb. 3 at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St.
Registration for the one-day tournament begins at 2pm Wednesday Jan. 17, with a deadline to enroll by 5pm Thursday Jan. 25. Team entry fee is $60 for each four-person team. The tournament is open to men and women at least 18 years of age. Team members will play at different tables.
Proceeds benefit youth, teen and senior programs within the Community Services Department.

Free practice for the SAT
Gilroy – Princeton Review will provide free practice testing and a strategy session for high school students at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St. Students must sign up at the library by Jan. 20. Test is 10am to 2pm Feb. 3 and results and strategy session is 10am to 2pm Feb. 10.

Calling all St. Mary School alumni
Gilroy– This year, St. Mary School is celebrating its 135th year continuously educating the youth of the area. On Jan. 27, 2007 alumni are invited to return to the school for an “Invitation Only” Anniversary Reunion. The day begins with tours of the school and new Science Lab from 3 to 4:30pm. The annual Catholic Schools Week Liturgy will be celebrated in the church at 5pm. Following Mass, the reception will be held in the gym until 7:30pm.

Info night for St. Mary parents
Gilroy – St. Mary School will host a “Parents Only” information evening for prospective parents for the coming school year 2007-08. The event will take place at the school at 6:30pm, Jan. 24, in the kindergarten classroom.
Attendees will have a chance to meet the principal and kindergarten teachers to find out how their child would spend the day in the St. Mary School kindergarten program.

Gilroy – Italian Catholic Federation Branch #28 presents the seventh annual polenta dinner to be prepared by Chef Mario Fiorio and crew, Feb. 3, St. Mary Church Cullen Hall 11 First St.
All proceeds benefit ICF charities. Take out dinner available after 5:30pm, bring your own containers. Dinner to be served from 6pm to 7pm Public invited, donation $12, adults and $5 children younger than 10. Tickets will not be sold at the door to be assured of getting a ticket, buy early.

Winter donations for homeless
Gilroy – St. Joseph’s Family Center and Articulate Solutions are continuing their efforts to help keep the homeless warm and dry throughout the winter. Donations are needed to help purchase and assemble Winter Survival Kits. The kits will contain items that will be helpful during the cold winter months: water repellent sleeping bags and jackets, backpacks, knit caps and gloves, flashlights and sundries such as toothpaste, socks and soap.
Checks may be written out to St. Joseph’s Family Center. Please mark your check “Winter Survival Kit.” Donations may be mailed to St. Joseph’s, 7950 Church St., Suite A in Gilroy or Articulate Solutions, located at 65 Fifth Avenue, Suite 100, also in Gilroy.

Help support a fallen rider
Gilroy – Mario Bonfante, a Gilroy native, had his promising AFM/AMA Road Racing career cut short by a tragic bicycle accident, which broke his neck and left him paralyzed. Mario and his family are now faced with the challenges ahead. You Can Help.
Mario is an active member of a youth Bible study. Members of his group came up with the idea to raise funds needed to care for him through rehabilitation.
There will be five prizes announced at the raffle drawing Feb. 12: First prize is $1,000, second prize is $750, third is $500, fourth is $250 and fifth is $100. Raffle tickets are available for $10 each at High Gear Powersports, 7661 Monterey St.
