I’d like to make a comment on Wednesday morning’s dispatch. I
think it’s fairly tacky that the paper put a small column on the
death of President Ford on page A6 and it’s not on the front
page.
Lack of coverage

“I’d like to make a comment on Wednesday morning’s dispatch. I think it’s fairly tacky that the paper put a small column on the death of President Ford on page A6 and it’s not on the front page. I guess if he was a Democratic president it would have been all over the pages and the presses would have stopped and the city would have went into mourning, but since he’s a Republican, I guess his death is meaningless. I think it’s tacky but hey that’s politics.”

Red Phone:

Caller, the placement had nothing to do with President Ford’s party affiliation. The Dispatch learned the news of President Ford’s death just before deadline and in our best effort placed the news where possible at the time and ran extended coverage the next day.

Right on red

“I just read your article on the Red Phone and your statement about coming from the Costco and turning on 10th Street. You state that all you have to do is stop at the red and make sure the area is clear and then proceed. It says the only thing the driver has to be cautious about is the pedestrians, but you also have to be cautious about the traffic coming onto 10th Street to make sure you got room to merge on there.

One of the reasons I’ve found that people get all excited behind me when I stop and wait for the traffic to clear is because they don’t understand that. They think I should just be going on, especially if they are trying to merge onto the highway. So you might want to clarify that in your paper. That the reason that people are stopping there even if there aren’t pedestrians is they’re waiting for traffic to clear so they can enter onto 10th Street.”

Red Phone:

Good caller thank you for once again reminding drivers they must wait for all traffic, going in any direction, ahead of them to clear before moving. Unfortunately, drivers become unaware that everyone on the road has their own different agenda, so let’s all try and drive patiently and safely when out and about in busy areas.

Half staff, not mast

“Hey Red Phone, all weekend I heard TV commentators say that flags are flying at half mast in honor of President Gerald R. Ford, who died last week.

I believe that’s incorrect. I think flags fly at half staff on land and half mast on ships. Also, I saw two flags at our car dealerships still flying full staff. Get a clue and have some respect. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

You are correct caller, the proper usage for flying flags in honor of someone’s death is half staff if on land and half mast when on a ship. Thank you for pointing this out, maybe those using it incorrectly will by chance catch this column as well as the car dealerships.
