Learn Emergency Survival Skills

Gilroy – South County residents can learn to weather disasters, from earthquakes to floods to terrorism, through the Community Emergency Response Team, a joint effort of the Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Services and the City of Gilroy. CERT will offer weekly training Wednesday nights from Sept. 11 to Oct. 23. Space is limited.

Parade to Honor World Series Team

Gilroy – The Gilroy girls Majors softball team took fifth place in the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Ore. this week, and will be welcomed back home with a parade starting at 11am Saturday.

The parade will take place between Seventh and Fourth streets on Monterey Road, culminating in a presentation for the team’s players and coaches in front of Pinnacle Bank Plaza. Friends, families and fans are encouraged to bring signs and balloons to show support for the girls’ incredible season.

SC Democratic Club Meets

Gilroy – Join members of the South County Democratic Club for a day of food, friendship and education about local environmental issues at a fund-raiser from 11am to 3pm, Sunday, at San Martin Country Park, 13865 Monterey Road, San Martin. Suggested donation is $20, children younger than 12, $5. Each member and or family attending is asked to bring a dessert with a great Democratic name. There will be a prize for the best name. A silent auction will be held.

Sons of Italy Barbecue

Gilroy – The Sons of Italy, Gilroy Lodge, is holding its annual barbecue Sunday, at Christmas Hill Park.

Festivities begin at noon with appetizers followed by a New York steak barbecue at 1pm, including salad, beans, garlic bread and drinks. The cost for adults is $15, and children younger than 12 cost $7.50.
