Gilroy – A bilingual man with nearly a decade of education experience will be the assistant principal at the high School.

Arturo Rodriguez was chosen by Gilroy Unified School District staff to be part of the administrative team of Gilroy High School. A former principal and math teacher who learned Spanish as his first language, is looking forward to the start of school Aug. 23.

Rodriguez most recently worked for a year as principal at Escuela Popular, a charter high school in San Jose. Before that, he spent three years as a math teacher at Downtown College Preparatory in San Jose and four years at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara.

Transitioning to an administrative role at a school as large as GHS, which has about 2,500 students, will not be difficult, Rodriguez said.

“There’s definitely more challenges, but at the same time there’s more resources,” he said.

His responsibilities at the high school will include overseeing the math department, student services, foreign exchange program and technology systems. In particular, the assistant principal helps facilitate the annual state standardized tests and organize the Code Red drill.

Parents, who are a key to raising student achievement, need to have somebody at the high school that can help them, Rodriguez said.
