Chain, chain, chain

Dear Red Phone:

My concerns pertain to Krazy Koyote. City Council should close it immediately. Do not give licenses to this person from San Jose who owns a taqueria. He wants a restaurant by day and parties by night. Isn’t that what Krazy Koyote is now? No more Mexican eateries! We are saturated already. How about a nice restaurant? – something along the lines like Outback Steakhouse would be a welcome. One more thing, Rilo Nilo and El Tenampa, we should show them the door too. We need to make downtown a family atmosphere!

Dear Steaking Claims:

Red Phone wants to clear a few things up. It’s up to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control – not the city – to decide if Krazy Koyote can change hands, and it doesn’t look like it’ll happen soon. ABC says they won’t grant any ownership transfer until all disciplinary actions are finished. Meanwhile, the city can take independent steps to affect Krazy Koyote’s license – including suspending or revoking it – regardless of what ABC is doing. As for your other concerns, Caller, if you’ve got problems with Rio Nilo and El Tenampa, you can always call City Council. But family-friendliness aside, both are local businesses, trying to make it downtown. Do we really need another chain in Gilroy?

no sign of sign

Dear Red Phone:

In the Aug. 3 paper under “Cheers and Jeers” there was a very nice cheers for a Norm Watenpaugh placard. It says it’s on Wren Avenue at the entrance to the Uvas levee. I went there yesterday, and the only thing at Wren and the Uvas levee is a wooden board that has graffiti on it.

At Miller Avenue and the levee there is a DeBell memorial, a bench with water usage by the water district, and Santa Clara County has put something there for mountain lions. I really didn’t see anything for Norm Watenpaugh. I’m wondering if I’m not looking in the right place, or if it hasn’t been put up yet or if it’s been taken down already. I’d really like to see it or know the answer.

Red Phone:

Dear Searching:

You’re referring to the memorial for Norm Watenpaugh, a conservationist who maintained a “cavity nesting” program for the Audubon Society in Christmas Hill Park and the Uvas Preserve by building hanging “houses” for species such as western bluebirds, tree swallows and chestnut-backed chickadees, all of which has seen their numbers plummet because of the loss of habitat from development. In October, a pickup struck Watenpaugh as he returned from one of his nightly walks, ending his 74 years of protecting and preserving wildlife. An educational signpost titled “Birds of the Uvas Creek Preserve” was dedicated to him and his work at the Uvas levee and unveiled by his children Don and Norma Watenpaugh along with the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, which has carried on Watenpaugh’s work of providing homemade nesting boxes for birds threatened by loss of habitat . (See “Memorial Dedicated to Beloved Conservationist,” July 29).

But, the memorial turned out to be too large for its location and is being reprinted to better fit.
