Big Rain Performs in Gilroy

Gilroy – The next Summer Concert features Big Rain, from 5:30 to 7:30pm today, on the amphitheater stage at Christmas Hill Park. Admission is free.

Big Rain has been performing nonstop for 13 years, during which they’ve logged more than 1,100 performances, performed with some of the biggest names in the business, and have an established reputation as a great band with an uplifting sound.

Swing Music Downtown Today

Gilroy – Dance your feet off with the Christine Ferrari Swing Band at Fifth Street Live Music, Friday on Fifth Street between Monterey and Eigleberry streets in Downtown Gilroy. An Ultimate Cardio swing dance instructor and her partner will perform at 6:30pm and give a short swing dance lesson to the public before the music starts at 7pm and during the 8pm break.

Wine tasting will be provided by Solis Winery. Come down early for the Open Air Market starting at 5pm with apricots, strawberries, peaches, plums, nectarines, melons, corn, tomatoes, salsa, candles, soaps and more. Stop on your way home from work or even better, start your weekend off with a cool evening shopping, dining and dancing outdoors in downtown Gilroy.

Stroll Historic Fifth Street Saturday

Gilroy – This Saturday, members of the Gilroy Historical Society will lead a walking tour of cool, leafy and historic Fifth Street.

Meet at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. at 10am.

‘Zoot Suit’ Returns to the Stage

San Juan Bautista – El Teatro Campesino presents “Zoot Suit,” the critically acclaimed classic play written by Luis Valdez. Drawn from actual transcripts, documents and newspaper articles of the 1940s, “Zoot Suit” recreates historical events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder case that railroaded young Chicano pachucos or zoot suiters who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Valdez masterfully synthesizes fact and fiction using the case to examine Chicano Zoot Suit culture, prejudice, and the role of the media is the judicial system. Pulsing with the

Director Kinan Valdez will spearhead this production along with the support of the new generation of El Teatro Campesino. So get ready to boogie because El Pachuco is back again and ready to go!

Preview dates are 8pm Friday July 13, Saturday July 14, Thursday July 19 and Friday July 20, and at 2pm Sunday July 15.

Opening weekend is 8pm Saturday July 21 and 2pm Sunday July 22

Performances are 8pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, 2pm Saturday and Sunday matinees, through the shows final performance at 2pm, Sunday, Sept. 16.

The show plays at El Teatro Campesino Playhouse, 705 Fourth St., San Juan Bautista.

Cost is $30 for reserved seating, opening night performance is $125.

Regular seating is $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and students and $18 for children.

Poker Tourney Raises Funds

Gilroy – The third annual Garlic No-Limit Texas Hold ’em Tournament is set for 10am July 14 at the Gilroy Senior Center.

Four-person teams will play at different tables in this recreational event. An entry fee of $60 is needed per team.

All proceeds from this event, the 13th in a series of Texas Hold ‘Em Tournaments hosted by the Gilroy Community Services Department, benefit senior, teen and youth programs.

See Backyard Model Railroads

Gilroy – South County Garden Railroaders invite the public to the 13th annual Garden Layout Tour to benefit the St. Joseph’s Center and Community Pantry from 9am to 3pm July 22. Visit 11 model railroads running through some of the most unusual backyard gardens in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Hollister and Scotts Valley as well the masterfully done San Juan Pacific Club layout at Bolado Park, the Bay Area Garden Railway Society modular layout and Live Steam layout. Please bring non perishable food (canned goods, pasta, cereal, etc.) to donate and pickup a guide book at the All Aboard Junction train store at 8355 Monterey St., Gilroy.
