Brownell School Breaks Ground
Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District will break ground on the new multipurpose center at Brownell Middle School today at 1pm. The center will be used to accommodate events that necessitate a large space, such as assemblies and after school parent workshops. The multipurpose center building process was introduced in a 10-year master plan in January 2006 and construction on the facility is scheduled to be completed by May 2008.
Student Assembles AIDS Kits
Gilroy – Resident Ryan Calvert, a middle school student at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville, participated with his classmates in the April 21 “AIDS Caregiver Kit Assembly Event,” sponsored by the Monterey Bay Women of Vision.
In anticipation of the event, Monte Vista middle school and high school students collected flashlight batteries and bars of antibacterial soap for the Caregiver Kits. When Calvert and his fellow middle school students went to volunteer on the kit assembly day, they brought with them more than 500 batteries and more than 200 bars of soap from their classmates.
Nearly 100 people from around the county participated in assembling the kits at Coastlands Church in Aptos. The kits will be sent to Africa, India and South America, which are the countries hardest hit by AIDS. In addition to soap, flashlights and batteries, each kit contains basic supplies like washcloths, cotton balls and latex gloves.
“We put handwritten notes in all the boxes,” Calvert said, “to encourage the people who get them.”
Linda Richards, whose Monte Vista middle school students also participated in the project, said, “An important part of our students’ education is learning how to make a difference in the world. This was a great way for them to put their faith into action.”
