Dispatch Reporter Honored

Gilroy – Dispatch public safety reporter Emily Alpert received a certificate of appreciation in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The award from nonprofit Community Solutions was presented last week during a candlelight vigil against sexual assault.

Alpert’s reporting included a story on the lags in disclosure of a rape case by Gilroy police and generally raised the profile of an organization that seeks to help survivors of sexual assault. Her coverage of former Garlic Festival Queen Franca Barsi, who was murdered by an ex-boyfriend, inspired a number of women to seek help for domestic abuse.

GHS Rocks on the Dock Tonight

Gilroy – A host of Gilroy High School bands will play on the concrete stage at the back of the high school theater at 5pm today. Proceeds from the $5 tickets and food sold at Rock on the Dock benefit the Art-Lit Guild, which promotes art and literature at the high school through meetings and a yearly student-run publication.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo a Day Early

Gilroy – Gilroy High School will be hosting the Latinos Talent Show from 6 to 8pm followed by a Cinco de Mayo Dance Friday night from 8pm to midnight.

All students are welcome and tickets are available in room BE-2. Entry to the events cost $12 while either single event costs $8.

‘Lend Me A Tenor’ Free for Mothers

Gilroy – The cast and crew of “Lend Me A Tenor” will celebrate Mother’s Day by giving all mothers free admission to the Saturday, May 12 matinee performance. Call the Gavilan College Box Office at (408) 846-4973 to reserve your seats and a free Mother’s Day ticket.

The special Mother’s Day Matinee of “Lend Me A Tenor” begins at 2pm, at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the Gavilan College Theater Box Office or by calling 846-4973.

Lend Me A Tenor centers around the biggest night in history for the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. The world famous tenor Tito Morelli is set to perform Othello. The general manager of the opera hopes this performance will put Cleveland on the map. The star ends up arriving late, intoxicated and has no time to rehearse, which causes a series of hilarious mishaps. What will the opera house do?

South County Post Senior Graduation

Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Office of Education will be hosting a banquet for area high school graduates in the Post Senior program. The South County Post Senior Graduation Banquet – held at Fortino Winery’s Barrel Room, 4525 Hecker Pass Highway – will honor the hard work and accomplishments of this year’s seniors as well as the family and friends that supported them. At the event, an alumnus of the Post Senior program will talk about his history with and life after the program. The May 31 buffet dinner, running from 6 to 9pm, will be prepared by winery chefs and will cost $20 per person. RSVPs and payment are required by May 18.

Merit Scholar in Gilroy’s Midst

Gilroy – Shashi Sarnaik has been named a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship Program. She was among the top 50,000 highest scorers on the Preliminary Standardized Aptitude Test, which more than 1.4 million students nationwide took earlier this year. Sarnaik – a junior at Mount Madonna School – will be informed in September whether she is among the 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists, who then have a chance to compete for 8,000 Merit Scholarships.

Sister City Dinner, Auction Slated

Gilroy – The Gilroy Sister Cities Association is holding an International Dinner and Auction Saturday, May 5 at the IFDES Portuguese Lodge, 250 Old Gilroy St. It begins with a social hour at 6pm. Dinner will be served at 7pm, followed by an auction at 8:45pm. Donation is $30 per person.
