SANTA CRUZ – Practice makes perfect. And that just might mean a trip to New York City or cash prizes for teams competing in the 21st Annual Clam Chowder Cook Off at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
The event is scheduled for Feb. 22, and coordinators suggest now is the time to start forming teams, practicing culinary chowder skills and creating costume themes.
“The really good chowder – the award winning chowder – is usually not something that someone whips up that morning,” Chowder Committee spokeswoman Lisa McGinnis said. “It’s those teams that form early and prepare for the big day that succeed. Teamwork is the key.”
Those teams compete for the title of best Boston (white) and/or Manhattan (red) clam chowders. Divisions include individuals, corporate/media and fire stations.
The “People’s Choice” award provides two round-trip tickets on Continental Airlines to New York. Two more Continental round trip tickets are given away in a grand prize drawing among the Best Chowder winners, who are determined by a panel of culinary judges.
Teams may obtain entry forms online at www.beachboardwalk.com/01_concerts.html or www.satacruzparksandrec.com. For entry forms and more information, teams my also contact the Parks and Recreation Department’s Special Events Hotline at (831) 420-5273. Each team entry includes two all-day, unlimited rides tickets to the Boardwalk ($49.90 value) and two team T-shirts if entered by Jan. 31.
The cook off is a benefit for Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation’s youth summer programs.
