Gilroy – The city’s efforts to emerge from a “sluggish” economy and lure new businesses will headline a morning speech this month by Gilroy’s economic development chief.
In his May 17 overview on the city’s economic future, Gilroy Economic Development Director Larry Cope will cover emerging development trends in the city’s downtown as well as the next generation of growth along Pacheco Pass Highway.
The area is already home to big box shopping centers that pump millions of dollars into city tax coffers annually. Officials hope a pair of developments farther east along Pacheco Pass to continue building on that success and bring in new industrial sector jobs.
So far, the focus has been on attracting customers for the McCarthy Business Park east of the two regional shopping centers off Pacheco Pass. In addition to 16 acres of retail stores, the park will add 80 acres of space for industrial tenants. Cope said he is honing in on electronics manufacturers and other businesses that support the industry. In the meantime, a national retailer of farming-related supplies has signed on for a 23,000-square-foot store in the shopping area.
“We’ll be talking about current activities that are going on,” Cope said, “as well as future ideas and hopes we have for the community.”
