Gilroy – Monterey flexed its muscles Thursday and yet Gilroy got in a few licks early before the talented Toreadores proved too much Thursday at Bob Hagen Memorial Gym.

Utilizing its P-H-K attack — that’s pass, hit, kill — Monterey remained unbeaten in the Tri-County Athletic League with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-14 win.

The Mustangs did get the first point of the match when 5-4 Alfred Medenceles blocked a kill. And GHS (9-19, 4-6) was even at 5-all before the Toreadores began to pull away. Monterey didn’t have great statistics but that’s because coach Dave Schwartz utilized multiple individuals.

“This team worked really hard in February and March just to become a team,” said Schwartz, who’s had to use inexperienced setters for his talented hitters as the Toreadores (19-8, 10-0) chug toward a third straight TCAL title.

“They’re good but we made more mistakes than called for,” said GHS coach Sue Grogan. “We came out firing in the first game. It looked like we would give them a run for the money. But a couple of hits got by us and it seemed that they (Mustangs) figured they weren’t going to win.”

Kevin Bruce led the Mustangs with six kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Greg Calimpong had 10 assists. Mike Leininger had 13 digs.

It may have been a different day but it was the same result.

Monte Vista Christian edged Gilroy 4-3 Thursday in Tri-County Athletic League match. But this encounter went down to the very last point.

The No. 1 doubles teams split the first two sets with Gilroy’s Sai Erdnechemeg and Sang Min Park winning the first set 6-3 and dropping the second 7-6 to James Klindt and Shouji Chang. The Gilroy duo led 10-9 in the third set before the MVC players rallied to take the last three points to clinch the match.

Other than that, all matches were decided in straight sets. Gilroy’s Ben Wilson and Matt Chan were winners in the top singles. Wilson defeated Aaron Shapiro 7-5, 7-6. Chan defeated Cory Klindt 6-1, 6-2.

MVC’s Zack Nissen and Peter Lee won the other singles matches. Nissen beat Vinh Vong 6-4, 6-2, and Lee beat Ryan Azad 6-1, 6-2.

MVC won at No. 2 doubles as Seung Han and Charles Kwak defeated Edwin Hernandez and Esteban Delgadillo 6-3, 6-1. Gilroy won at No. 3 doubles as Zach Singh and Mitch Souza defeated Wai-Sun Cheng and Dean Trando 6-1, 6-3.

“I was a little disappointed,” GHS coach John Langer said, “but I was pleased with how our No. 1 doubles team battled.”
