Homestead entered the final of the Monta Vista/Cupertino Host Lions’ Easter Tournament having won 13 of its last 14 games.

Gilroy, however, routed Homestead for the second time this season Friday, breezing to a 15-0 win and its sixth straight triumph.

“I was happy with our energy,” GHS coach Clint Wheeler said. “It was probably the most complete game we played this year.”

Gilroy (13-8) was clicking on all cylinders, getting one-hit pitching from Jacob Dexter. The junior southpaw, who allowed just a leadoff single by Brian Labadie, struck out six and walked one.

Dexter also banged out three hits to lead the offense.

The big blow, however, came from the hottest hitter on the team. Tyler Osborne’s grand slam was the big hit in a four-run third inning. Osborne, who entered the game with seven hits in his last 11 at-bats, had two hits in the game as did Michael Stevens and Danny Contreras. Kevin Grove and Matt Hemeon each had two RBIs. Osborne has a team-leading four home runs.

“Dexter pitched well,” Wheeler said. “He threw 65 pitches in five innings. And we played great defense. Our infielders Hemeon, Stevens and (‘Berto) Celestino all came up with good fielding plays.”

It was almost a repeat performance of the first time the teams when Gilroy won 17-2. That was in the midst of a three-game Homestead losing streak before Cupertino school went on a hot streak that included winning their first seven El Camino League starts. Homestead is now 13-5.

“The difficult preseason we went through has definitely gotten us ready for whatever is in front of us,” Wheeler said. “I feel good about the way we’re playing.”

GHS takes two days off and then has three games in three days, starting at 3pm Monday when the Mustangs host Fremont-Sunnyvale.
