Gilroy – The Gavilan Rams have their lone opportunity to play under Friday Night Lights this season with a road test in San Pablo against the Contra Costa Comets.

Coach John Lango’s eighth Ram football squad pits a 1-2 mark against the winless (0-3) Comets at 7pm.

Contra Costa, a Bay Valley Conference member, finally got its offense going in a 70-34 loss to Chabot last weekend. Coach John McDermott, in his fourth season leading Contra Costa, believes that the defense is still not fully prepared to play a solid game.

The Comets have operated a one-back attack in losses to Los Medanos, Diablo Valley and Chabot. McDermott expects the Comets to employ some two-back sets in an effort to strengthen the repertoire of the offensive unit.

Lango called Contra Costa tight end Orlando Arnold “a stud. He’s big, athletic, a big-play guy.”

McDermott echoed Lango’s praise of the 6-foot-4, 265-pound sophomore. “He’s our go-to guy, a real deal at this level.”

Harrison Rheinhardt, the Comets’ leading rusher, is a fixture at tailback. Leaders on defense include Sean Nakamura at linebacker and safety Mike Abston.

“We never under-estimate a Gavilan football team,” McDermott warned his charges of the Sept. 21 clash. “We know Gavilan’s a well-coached, very physical team. We barely beat them last year at their place (19-14).”

“I told our kids to not let their record (0-3) fool them,” Lango said of the Comets. “They have played three quality football programs. We’ll have to continue to improve in order to stay with Contra Costa.”

Gavilan will continue its pre-Coast Conference schedule Saturday night Sept. 29 against Hartnell at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
