SM Township Efforts Move Forward

The Dispatch will host the city council and mayoral debates from
6:30 to 9pm tonight at Gavilan College. The council forum will
consist of four rounds of four questions each, with one candidate
answering the query and another responding to that answer. The
shorter mayoral forum will follow.
Council, Mayoral Debate Tonight

Gilroy – The Dispatch will host the city council and mayoral debates from 6:30 to 9pm tonight at Gavilan College. The council forum will consist of four rounds of four questions each, with one candidate answering the query and another responding to that answer. The shorter mayoral forum will follow.

The newspaper and members of the American Association of University Women will ask questions concerning the possible multi-million-dollar acquisition of Gilroy Gardens, sidewalk repairs, raises for top-level city officials, the possibility of a massive new mall east of the city, public safety, housing development, and the $14 million school facilities debt.

Councilman Craig Gartman is challenging Mayor Al Pinheiro for the mayor’s seat, and planning commissioners Tim Day and Cat Tucker, lawyer Perry Woodward, former councilman Bob Dillon, and incumbents Roland Velasco and Valiquette are running for the three available council seats.

The event takes place at the CMAP TV Studio, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Ste. L139. It will be televised by CMAP on Channel 20

First Grad Night Meeting

Gilroy – The first Gilroy High School Grad Night meeting will be held at 7pm Wednesday, at the Gilroy High School Library. For all interested parents of seniors at GHS.

Information Aids Child Rearing

Gilroy – New and expecting mothers can find help with a free Kit for New Parents, published by First 5 Santa Clara County, a statewide cigarette-tax funded initiative that works toward the health and education of families and their young children. The kit includes information on breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, child safety, smoking, healthcare and childcare.

A three-year study in the “American Journal of Public Health” found that mothers who used the kit overwhelmingly found it helpful and were more likely to practice safe and healthy rearing practices than those that did not use the kit.

College Night Comes to Gilroy

Gilroy – Gilroy High School, in conjunction with South County Cal-SOAP, will host College Night from 6 to 8pm Monday. The night will feature 10-minute presentations on the college application process to Universities of California, community colleges, private schools and California State Universities. There will also be a presentation on financial aid.

After the presentations, there will be a 15-minute group question and answer and 50 minutes for individual consultations with school staff and higher education representatives.

Plenty of Books and Paper

Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District board of trustees unanimously approved a resolution regarding sufficiency of instructional materials, such as textbooks and paper, at a board meeting Sept. 6. This was a welcome change, district trustees and staff said, because the district did not have a sufficient supply last year.

‘Christmas in September’

Gavilan’s ‘High on Health’ Fair

Gilroy – Gavilan College Student Health Services and the Associated Student Body presents the 14th annual “High on Health” resource fair. This event, which regularly draws over 1,500 visitors, is free and open to the community. Visitors will have the chance to speak with community experts, find out about health-related internships and employment, and get referrals for counseling on and off campus. Free testing and referrals will be available for blood pressure, blood glucose, HIV/AIDS (confidential, no needles!) there will be opportunities for laughter, fun, massage, goodies, and a free prize drawing. Event held from 9am to 1pm Wednesday, at the Student Center, Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Perchlorate Group Meets

San Martin – The Perchlorate Community Advisory Group meets from 2 to 4pm Friday, Oct. 5, Friday Nov. 2, and Friday, Nov. 30. All meetings held at the San Martin Lion Club Hall, 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin.

Symphony Kicks Off New Season

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony’s 34th season of classical and contemporary music, kicks off with the first concert Romantic Masterworks, at 7:30pm, Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Gavilan College Theater.

Ticket prices are $20, $15, and $10.

Women’s Auxiliary Group Meets

Gilroy – The Women’s Auxiliary Post 6309 will be hosting 12th District President Joyce Fabela and her Post 6849, Salinas, on Monday, Oct. 8, at 6:30pm at the Veterans Building, 74 W. Sixth St., Gilroy. Pot luck will be served after the meeting and all members are cordially invited to attend.
