San Jose – Just about everything went wrong for Gilroy’s varsity field hockey team Wednesday. And according to coach Adam Gemar, the team didn’t do itself any favors.

A lack of ball movement and communication resulted in a 7-0 loss at Archbishop Mitty, and a tongue lashing for the players in practice the next day.

“We just talked to them today about playing as a team,” Gemar said Thursday afternoon. “There was not enough passing by star players.

“This year was pretty much the same as last year,” he said.

Last season the Mustangs fell by a substantial margin to Mitty as well.

While playing top tier competition is something coaches Adam and Erin Gemar thought would help before a relatively easy TCAL league schedule, the manner in which the team lost should serve as a wake-up call if the squad is going to have success later in the season.

“Mitty is just a good program, “Adam Gemar said. “They could sub people non-stop and you wouldn’t even notice. The (level of) play wouldn’t go down. (The loss) was all right, it humbles you.”

The coach said he thought the game might go their way after starting out strong, but things turned bad in a hurry.

“The first five minutes, I was like, ‘we’re jamming,’ But five minutes out of an hour is nothing. We just didn’t have the intensity.”

The team will have a chance for a redemption when the Mustangs face Mitty at home on Oct. 12. Until then, the team will look to rebound in the Willow Glen Invitational which begins today and will run through Saturday. Gilroy will play two games this afternoon and three games on Saturday.

Note: The junior varsity team lost 4-0 to Mitty on Wednesday. The team’s next game will be at Carmel High School at 3:30pm on Saturday.
