As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I always loved the fact that the
crew was ahead of its time in so many ways. Asian,
African-American, indeterminate Caucasian, Russian, Scottish and
Vulcan, they all worked together as a cohesive team.

Here at St. Joseph’s Family Center we are Lutheran, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, Catholic, Presbyterian, Muslim, Jewish, Episcopalian, Baptist, Baha’i, agnostic, New Hope Community, South Valley Community and Methodist. We are an example of what the world could look like – people of every ethnic and religious background working together in peace and cooperation no matter what our differences – all for the common good. We have 75 to 100 volunteers who contribute to our efforts. We feed, warm, house, transport and train nearly five percent of our town’s population during the course of a year. That’s why SJFC has been recognized by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors as one of the top charities in Santa Clara County.

That’s why I say that SJFC brings out the best in this community – the commander of our ship, Captain Cox, and first mate Vicky Martin, who oversees food distribution, have the privilege of seeing Gilroy ‘s altruism up close and personal. They witness the generosity of those who drop off formula for hungry babies or produce for low income families. When we put out a call for a specific need, you step up to the plate and help us out.

The good news is that as the new president of the board at St. Joseph ‘s Family Center, I am going to be enthusiastically asking everyone around town for their support. The bad news is that I am going to be enthusiastically asking everyone around town for their support. St. Joseph’s Family Center has been the primary resource for families and individuals in south Santa Clara County in need of urgent assistance for more than 40 years, but this year is particularly tough.

To help compensate for the loss of a particularly crucial grant, we have been brainstorming about how to raise extra funds to get us over the hump for this fiscal year. Your help can make it possible for us to keep our small staff employed. We don’t want to find ourselves unable to serve those who most need our help in this community. We don’t want our job training program to suffer; we don’t want to stop serving hot meals to seniors at Wheeler Manor; we don’t want our senior shuttle to be cut; we don’t want to be unable to give a hand to a family who could be prevented from becoming homeless. We need whatever you can spare, anything you can spare.

That’s why Starfleet Command has come up with a plan for a Big Band Wine Dinner. We have room for just 100 people at this event, which will be held in the barrel room at Leal Winery of Hollister on Nov. 10. Because this is a fund-raiser for the good of all those we help, we are asking for $150 per ticket. We want the enjoyment of your company as we wine and dine you to the music of a fabulous big band.

We don’t have any Vulcans on board as yet, but our commitment to serving those who are most in need in our community and the support of this community makes Gilroy the shining example it is to the rest of the county. Mark your calendars for Nov. 10 and join our crew for an exceptional evening. Our address is: St. Joseph ‘s Family Center at 7950 Church St. , Suite A, Gilroy , CA , 95020.
