Summer is coming to an end. We still don’t have what I would call “fall” weather, but still, autumn is looming on the horizon.

The most unmistakable clue that summer is ending? Back to school.

Now that we are back at our desks, and the weather will start cooling down, it is common for our activity levels to wane. As such, we do not burn as many calories and have a tendency to put on the pounds.

But weight gain is not inevitable. It’s all about behavior. Here are a few ways to combat the pounds:

– Eat breakfast. Studies also show that people who eat breakfast consume fewer calories over the course of the day overall.

– Use low-fat or nonfat milk. If you swap out whole milk for skim milk in your coffee or cereal, you will cut out 60 calories and eight grams of fat per day. That adds up.

– Stay hydrated, but watch what you are drinking. Rather than consuming sugary sodas or fruit smoothies (also loaded with sugar), reach for water. If you need more flavor than plain water offers, plain or flavored teas, or flavored water are good options.

– Move! Whatever mode you choose, keep your body moving! Besides, exercise is a proven way to help relieve stress.

– Bring your lunch. We are much more likely to eat healthier when we prepare our own food. We are also more apt to eat more “realistic” portions.

– Snack healthy. There is nothing wrong with snacking during the day. Its what you snack on that makes the difference. It is also a wise idea to stay away from vending machines, since the choices there are usually less healthy.

– Sleep! Do not underestimate the power of enough sleep. Sleep deprivation causes in imbalance of certain hormones such as ghrelin, which causes weight gain, and leptin, which decreases appetite.
