Gilroy’s Robert Guerrero will train in Las Vegas for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and plans to leave for camp in mid-March.
Guerrero, a Gilroy native and the interim WBC welterweight champion, said on a conference call with reporters Thursday that he’s “pumped” to fight pound-for-pound king Mayweather on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be televised on Showtime.
“People say they can beat him, but they don’t have faith they can beat him,” Guerrero said on the conference call. “I’m 5-9, a true lefty, better footwork, great hand speed, punching power, not one-dimensional, and I have experience.”
The news that Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) would fight Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) became official Tuesday, when Mayweather’s camp announced a record six-fight deal with Showtime.
Also Thursday, Guerrero said on the conference call that he has signed a rematch clause with Mayweather, and he’ll submit to USADA drug testing.
