Red Phone

Dear Red Phone, “I’m reading the Dispatch and see there’s going to be district budget cuts. What were the taxes raised for? Our taxes have gotten raised three times in the last year so this wouldn’t happen. So why is this still happening? Where are our tax dollars going?”

Dear concerned about school cuts, Red Phone isn’t sure about the “raising taxes three times in the last year” reference. In 2008, voters did pass Measure P, the $150 million general obligation facilities bond proposed by the Gilroy Unified School District. Measure P been used for a laundry list of capital improvement projects including the completion of Christopher High School and major upgrades to Gilroy High School. Those funds cannot legally be used for operational expenses.
