He was Music Supervisor in the Palo Alto Unified School District for 30 years. Under his leadership, in 1985, the district was awarded the National Exemplary Music Program Award. He was Music Consultant to many school districts to strengthen their programs.
His music activities included conducting the professional Palo Alto Symphony, Palo Alto Youth Symphony and guest conducting orchestras and choruses in other cities and states.
His strong faith and devotion to Jesus Christ led him to direct church choirs for 50 years.
In the summer of 1981, he took the family to Alaska on a Mission to three Presbyterian Churches, sharing their music and helping where needed. For recreation the family sailed their boat to Alaska, the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of California and throughout the San Juan Islands.
Tom was a loving husband to his wife of 55 years, Audrey MacGregor Gray, a professional violinist and teacher, and devoted father to Don (Marcia) and Allison (Steve Rider). He will be sorely missed by family, relatives, friends, and former co-workers and students.
