Red Phone

Dear Red Phone,
“I am interested in finding out who is responsible for maintaining the landscaping in the patio garden in our beautiful new library. Some of the weeds were 6 feet tall and had stems an inch thick. Those stems couldn’t be pulled and had to be cut down using large shears. We have such a wonderful new facility and it is a shame that when looking out into the garden there were weeds preventing the landscape plantings from growing or even to be seen.”
Dear bookworm, we love the way our beautiful new library looks too – inside and out. To help answer your question, we got in touch with Public Information Officer Joe Kline with the City of Gilroy. Kline said the weeds in the library’s patio area were removed several weeks ago and the City is responsible for maintenance on library grounds.
According to Bill Headley, Parks and Landscape Supervisor for the City, the Civic Center grounds, which includes the library, are on a four-day per week maintenance service schedule with Saturdays being the heavy mowing and plant care day. The City is also arranging with library staff for a patio landscape service on Saturdays.
“There is both a gate key access issue and an exit alarm issue to be worked out with library staff for the patio,” Headley explained. “We are expecting the patio to be on a weekly service schedule coordinated with library staff.”
