Gilroy – Hot temperatures and flowing beer can be a dangerous combination when it comes to Garlic Festival crowds, but police reported only a few problems during the three-day event.
Eight people were arrested by Gilroy police and another five by Alcoholic Beverage Control officers, said Gilroy police Sgt. Kurt Svardal.
“It was a great, pleasant weekend,” he said.
One fight between three people broke out about 3:35 Saturday afternoon. Police arrested all three involved on suspicion of fighting in public, and all were Gilroy residents: Shawn Darin Snyder, 28, and Shane Martin Snyder, 26, both of 1485 Terri Lynn Court; and Adam Clark Jones, 26, of 745 Lexington Place.
A couple other disturbances were reported to officers on the festival grounds, but they were domestic squabbles, Svardal said.
One man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, after he jumped a fence to get into the festival. Jonathan Guglielmo, 21, of San Luis Obispo, was spotted by police about 3:45pm Sunday – he had hopped into the security headquarters area.
Public intoxication was the basis for four arrests made throughout the weekend.
Police arrested Phillip Thomas Scott, 19, of 3490 Pacheco Pass Highway; John Rovelin Duarte, 31, of Visalia; Gary Christopher Osuna, 21, of 195 Preservation Way in Morgan Hill.
The people cited by ABC officers were suspected of being minors in possession of alcohol or furnishing alcohol to minors.
Gilroy officers were joined by some from Morgan Hill, Watsonville, and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in patrolling the festival grounds, and all six Gilroy Police Department mounted units were deployed, Svardal said.
