The 111th and 112th annual Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Shows are just around the corner, and several of Gilroy finest competitors will be at the Cow Palace in Daly City this year to show their talented, furry friends.
The event will consist of two one-day shows from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 26 and 27. There will be a “Best in Show” selected each day and numerous special events are scheduled, including dog “fly-ball” demonstrations.
Retrievers have the largest number of entries with 150 types, including Chesapeake Bay, flat-coat, golden, Labrador, Nova Scotia and duck tolling. There will be 150 entries in the toy group, including 35 Cavalier King Charles and 25 puppies. Other large breeds will include more than 50 dachshunds and 35 Shetland sheepdogs.
Icelandic sheepdogs will be shown for the first time at both of this year’s shows. There will also be one miniature American shepherd entered, and there will be another uncommon breed shown – the Cane Corso.
Hailey Webb, 14, of Gilroy, will show “Nate,” one of her two pugs, under the Junior Showmanship category this year.
“I have been showing since I was 7 years old,” Webb said. “I have been able to do this all across the country and I love it.”
This is one of the oldest events in northern California, and it attracts thousands of people each year to see the best of the best in canine capability. With a group of nearly 2,000 dogs comprised of 136 breeds, the Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog show is one of the most prestigious dog shows in the nation and ranks alongside New York’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
The cost of admission to enjoy either day is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for children. There is also a $30 two-day Family Plan admission good for two adults and two children.
