The American Cancer Society invites homeowners, restauranteurs, shop owners and residents of all kinds to help “paint the town purple” for the month of June to celebrate cancer survivors and draw attention to their annual Relay for Life Event in June.

“We’re using the power of purple to bring good news to cancer survivors and mobilize the community,” reads a press release from the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society offers these suggestions for helping to turn Gilroy into a sea of purple from June 1 to June 21.

  • Decorate your home or store window with a purple display.
  • Hold a street contest for the best purple window display.
  • Display a purple yard sign in your front yard.
  • Decorate your front entrance, your fence, or your door with purple balloons.
  • Paint your porch light purple or insert a purple bulb.
  • Tie purple ribbons around trees in your neighborhood.
  • Wear purple clothing.
  • Buy and wear our purple wrist bands.
This year’s Relay for Life will be held at Christmas Hill Park Ranch Site from Saturday June 22 to Sunday June 23.

Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event – takes place around the globe and claims to be “the largest movement to end the disease,” according to the organization. People from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer and to fight back against this disease. Teams of participants camp out at a local high school, park or fairground, then take turns walking or running around a track or path. Signifying the fact “cancer never sleeps,” relays are overnight, last 24 hours and require each team to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
