The feeling on the eve of the first Friday of football season is almost indescribable.
It’s like I’m a Jack in the box, all wound up and ready to spring into action.
For prep reporters, this is the as good as it gets. Football means that sports are back.
Don’t get me wrong, the summer was exciting. The athletes of Gilroy kept me busy with cycling to softball and everything in between. I learned a lot about this community and I loved every minute of it.Â
But nothing quite matches the feeling of football.
As reporters, we’re there for the journey every night. We go through the ups and downs. We get to know the players, coaches and fans, building relationships along the way. These are our teams, too.
There’s this build-up, this anticipation that’s in the air today. Both Gilroy and Christopher kick off their season tomorrow, and that first snap marks a fresh start. It’s a chance for both teams to leave the 2-8 records of last year behind them and reach for greatness this season.
Gilroy gets its superstar, running back Brandon Boyd, back and he’s ready to tear up the turf. Christopher has a whole slew of players returning on both sides of the ball and it want to start things off with win a win against Sobrato, a team it has yet to beat.
The Mustangs start things off at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow against Live Oak at home. The Cougars will take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Live Oak.
Let’s not forget about Gavilan, who is looking to change the way it’s perceived and get back to being a winning program. The Rams hit the field at 6 p.m. Saturday at Yuba.
Though football may be the primary focus, it also marks the start of a new season of cross country, golf, tennis, water polo, volleyball, field hockey and soccer for our area teams.
I’m busting out a brand new reporter pad and I’m ready to get out there and see what Gilroy has to offer in the world of prep and collegiate sports. If my preseason interviews are any indication, the fall will be full of exciting action across the board.
