GILROY – Senior Greg Hamik’s game-high 19 points led the way for the Gilroy High boys basketball team en route to a 68-40 victory over Live Oak in the opening round of the 30th annual Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament on Friday night.

“I know a lot of the kids so it was definitely more intense and more competitive,” Hamik said of the match up against Live Oak.

Hamik also dished out five assists and was active on the defensive end, coming away with five steals.

Michael Aldridge hit four consecutive shots, spanning the tail end of the first period and into the second, on his way to a 12-point effort. Max Fishler came off the bench early and often to contribute nine points and Michael Hartman had eight. Guard Michael Schreiber had 10 points and Nathan Seifert poured in nine to lead the Acorn scorers.

The Mustangs led by one, 16-15, after a tightly contested first quarter but soon put some room between them and the visiting Acorns, implementing an intimidating press defense.

The slim one-point lead ballooned to a 15-point advantage at 40-25 by the end of the second quarter.

“We came out a little slow, but we pulled it together,” Aldridge said. “We started to get the assists and make our shots. They got some breaks on the press but for the most part is was more of an advantage than a failure.”

The Acorns fought their way back into it, cutting the margin to 10 midway through the third, but two baskets by the Mustangs to close out the period increased the lead back to 14.

“I was glad we were able to keep the pressure up on our press,” said Opere, who hustled up and down the floor to the tune of 10 rebounds on the night.

The Mustangs (6-1) take on Aptos tonight at 8 p.m. in Gilroy for the right to play in the finals.

The two teams met two weeks ago with GHS trumping Aptos 64-24.
