Things only got better for the Christopher High junior varsity boys basketball team at the San Lorenzo Valley Tournament played out over the weekend – the Cougars first tournament as a program.

After dropping its first game to Aptos 59-40 on Thursday, CHS put together back-to-back wins, including a 52-26 victory over Scotts Valley in the consolation game Saturday afternoon.

“It was a very good win for us,” head coach Kaden Bahner. “Our guys just really beared down and played at our level. It was a complete team effort. All 11 guys scored.”

The 26-point triumph was the Cougars most complete effort of the three-day tournament.

They pulled out a tight 36-33 victory over Crystal Springs Uplands during Day 2 on Friday, getting win no. 1 out of the way in just their second official game.

Sophomore Marcus Harrell posted a team-high 10 points, and for the second straight game Peter Hilkene finished among the leading scorers, contributing eight points.

A nine-point effort from sophomore point guard D.J. Campos, led all Cougars in Game 1. In their debuts, freshman Andrew Foster and Hilkene each had six points and freshman Travis Hill had five.

Girls Basketball

It took a couple games, but the CHS junior varsity girls team picked up its first win as a unit, wrapping up the Leland Tournament with a 45-17 win over Cupertino on Saturday.

The Lady Cougars played strong throughout the event for head coach Heather Stewart, who said the team gained some valuable experience over the three-game span.

“Every kid played in all three games,” Stewart said. “We have a lot of room for improvement and our coaching staff is excited about the future of the program.”

CHS nearly upset host school Leland on Thursday night.

Tied going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars were unable to fend off a late Chargers push in a 43-37 loss.

CHS faced another tough opponent Friday in Notre Dame-San Jose, keeping it close at the half before the Regents poured it on in the second half of play for a 52-29 win.

Hanna Tabron totaled 32 points in the three games to lead the Cougars, including a 14-point performance in the first game. She also snagged a combined 24 rebounds.

Merrett Brown led the way for the Cougars with 13 points in Game 3 and Sophia Amelio contributed eight points in the win.

The Cougars play host to Gunderson High School at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
