GILROY – A busy week for three Gilroy middle school wrestling teams concluded last Thursday night at the Santa Clara County Wrestling Championships, hosted by South Valley.

Solorsano, Brownell and South Valley combined to send 20 athletes into the County meet after they qualified in either first or second place two days earlier at the section finals.

When the mats were rolled up and the commotion had settled, eight Tigers, one Bruin and one Golden Eagle, were crowned champions in their respective weight classes.

The eight champions by South Valley tied a school record, head coach Armando Garcia said.

In all, 19 athletes from the local schools placed in the top three.

According to Garcia, the highlight of the night came courtesy of the 105-pound match between Alex Felix-Garcia of South Valley, and Bryce Clark of Fischer.

“Everybody was going hysterical at the end of it,” coach Garcia said.

The match went into quadruple overtime where Garcia was able to eek out a 2-1 victory.

Brownell’s Daniel Barboza won the 125-pound title and Raul Meza captured the 95-pound championship for Solorsano.
