A 19-year-old woman, caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting, is expected to recover from her injuries.
About 10 p.m. Tuesday, an unknown number of suspected Norteño gang members in a modern red sedan pulled up alongside a known Sureño gang member, yelled gang-related slogans and opened fire, police said. At the time, the 21-year-old male Sureño – who police have identified as such through his affiliations, tattoos and criminal history – was standing in front of a residence along the 7200 block of East Street –east of the downtown – with his 19-year-old female cousin.
The suspected Norteños discharged an undisclosed caliber weapon an unknown number of times at the cousins.
“As the victims ran from the shooting the 19-year-old female collapsed and realized she had been shot,” Sgt. Jim Gillio said.
The female was transported to an area trauma center after police arrived, and Gillio said she is expected to recover. Police are not sure if she has any gang ties aside from her familial connection, and Gillio would not say where or how many times she was shot.
Last week, the district attorney secured warrants for five suspected gang members who face murder charges in connection with the shooting death of Larry Martinez. Police arrested three of the gang members and two remain outstanding. Martinez, an 18-year-old suspected Norteño gang member, was shot down last November when a gang fight erupted blocks away from the Gilroy Police Department.
Gillio said the timing of Tuesday night’s shooting in east Gilroy was coincidental, and police do not believe the latest shooting had anything to do with the arrests.
