HAYWARD – The Gavilan women’s volleyball team is on a roll.
The Lady Rams (9-5, 1-0) hadn’t dropped a set en route to a
three-game winning streak heading into their first Coast Conference
match of 2009 against Chabot College on Wednesday night in
Hayward.
Behind a performance coach Kevin Kramer called his team’s most
complete showing to date, the Rams kept their unbeaten- set and
winning streak alive with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 victory over the
Gladiators.

The Lady Rams (9-5, 1-0) hadn’t dropped a set en route to a three-game winning streak heading into their first Coast Conference match of 2009 against Chabot College on Wednesday night in Hayward.
Behind a performance coach Kevin Kramer called his team’s most complete showing to date, the Rams kept their unbeaten- set and winning streak alive with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 victory over the Gladiators.
“Chabot is by far the biggest test we’ve had in a while,” Kramer said. “We are right now, knock on wood, healthy so it was nice to get after somebody and show what we have.”
After the two teams traded points to a 10-10 tie in the opening set, a Cheyenne Hambley kill sparked a Rams five-point run, giving them the momentum to close out the set victory.
The Rams defensive trio of Jenny Fowles (13 digs), Shayna Nakata (14 digs) and Bri Romero (17 digs) established the tone for Gavilan in the second set, allowing for Hambley and Tessa Fischer to pound out kill after kill.
“I would say this is the most complete win in the three years I have been here,” Kramer said. “Passing, serving, hitting, blocking, everything worked tonight.”
The Rams kept up the pace in set three and cruised to an easy win.
Hambley finished the night with 10 kills, six blocks and two service aces. Ramero added nine kills, and Fischer put down seven kills, including four in the final set and also had five blocks.
“We are winning a lot of different ways, with people doing a lot of different things,” Kramer said of his team’s recent success. “When you get some results it turns the girls into believers.”
Gavilan needs to bring its ‘A’ game with them tonight as they host defending conference champion Cabrillo College. Since the volleyball program was reinstated three-plus years ago, the Rams have not had a win over the Eagles – a streak Kramer wants to end.
“It’s one that we haven’t been able to get,” Kramer said. “We have all the tools necessary, we just have to mentally show up and get over that mental hump.”
The match is set for 6:30 at Gavilan.
