GILROY – With four matches going to tiebreaker, it was no wonder Gilroy High’s girls varsity tennis coach Jami Reynolds let out a sigh of relief when her team took three of the extra sets and sent visiting Alisal home with a 5-2 defeat Thursday afternoon.
“They like to take it all the way to the end,” Reynolds said.
The match was still undecided before No. 2 singles player Alissa Castro put the final touches on a hard-fought three-set win over Nicole Saldena, 2-6, 6-0, 11-9, to give the GHS its crucial fourth point.
“Alissa is smart, she knows how to out-think her opponent,” Reynolds said. “She really figured her out.”
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after a swift 6-1, 6-1 triumph by No. 3 singles player Jennifer Kwong, and a tiebreaker win by No. 4 singles Sattea Khay, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3.
“She had a lot of short serves,” Kwong said of her challenger, Lizette Rosales. “I was able to return them really well.”
No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi overcame early difficulties, with the help of a mini pep talk with Reynolds, to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
“I just needed to clear my head,” Munshi said. “I was able to use my power shots against her. I felt very comfortable with my forehand.”
An entertaining No. 1 doubles match gave Gilroy its final point. The charismatic tandem of Melanie Morelos and Elania Vasquez rallied to take control after dropping their second set,
6-4, 5-7, 10-5.
