BERKELEY – Former Gilroy High field hockey standouts, Erin Magill and Laura Spellman, who now suit up for the Cal Berkeley Golden Bears, were recognized this week by the NorPac Conference.
Magill, who graduated from GHS in 2007 was named Defensive Player of the Week and Spellman who graduated this past school year, was presented the Rookie of the Week award, according to a UC Berkeley news release.
“It’s been a long road this season, but it has finally clicked for me,” Spellman said. “I was really shocked, but it’s nice to be honored.”
Spellman said the energy of play at the collegiate level is a lot faster than what she faced in high school but added that her time at Gilroy helped prepare her.
She has started 11 of the team’s 14 games this season, coming away with her first collegiate goal in a 4-1 victory over Pacific on Oct. 18.
Magill, who has started all 14 games for the Bears, also earned the NorPac Offensive Player of the Week honors last month after her hat trick helped the Bears upset then-13th ranked Stanford.
“I grew up with Laura so I’ve been playing with her for a really long time,” the redshirt sophomore said. “It’s fun because all of our parents get to come to the games and they are all friends. Laura is doing very well coming into the college game especially since she just graduated.”
Magill is second on the team with six goals.
Magill said she still keeps tabs on the Gilroy field hockey team, adding that the younger sisters of some of her teammates in high school are now on the team.
“Adam and Erin are really good coaches,” she said. “They teach the game in a way that can translate easily to the college level.”
