GILROY – Behind three-goal performances by Alex Rose and Shayna Robeldo, the Gilroy High varsity field hockey team remained unbeaten as they cruised to a comfortable 13-0 win over Mission Trail opponent Carmel at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex on Tuesday.

In all, seven different Mustangs (16-0, 10-0) tallied at least one goal en route to the blow out.

The Mustangs had no trouble executing and connecting with fluid passes all game and put together a fierce onslaught of shots on goal, jumping out to a 5-0 halftime lead.

Emily Costa put Gilroy on the board less than two minutes into the contest, scooping one in from a tough angle, standing parallel to the goal.

Five minutes later Aubrey Young cleaned up an Elise Ogle rebound for a 2-0 Mustangs lead.

The Mustangs spread out three more goals to close out the half as Ogle, Mandi Jo Torres and Rose’s first of the game with three minutes to play in the half all but sealed the win.

All three of Robledo’s goals came in the second half as she fueled the Mustangs scoring train with two goals seven minutes apart.

Rose capped her hat trick with goals at the 10-minute mark and with a little more than four minutes to play. Ogle, Katelyn Nebesnick and Kaylana Mah also registered second half goals.

The easy win came on the heels of perhaps the Mustangs toughest test since the Central Coast Section playoffs a year ago.

Head Coach Adam Gemar said his team’s 3-2 overtime win over Scripps Ranch out of San Diego was “a thriller for sure.”

The Mustangs had to fight back from a 2-0 halftime hole to force overtime and eventually extra strokes.

“That was awesome. It was such a great game,” Gemar said. “They just murdered us the first 20 minutes. Their speed and stops were just unsurpassed by any other team I’ve seen. We kind of went into frantic mode. I thought it was going to end up 6-0 or something. They were that good.”

Despite being outplayed in the first half, the Mustangs rallied behind strong goal tending by Geralyn Moon and received big goals from two of their captains.

Junior Dani Hemeon scored off of a short corner and Torres followed with a goal later in the the second half.

“Once we started passing, it all worked out,” Gemar said.

Moon shut down Scripps Ranch in the best-of-five extra stroke play as the Mustangs converted on three of their first four shots to secure the win.
