Gaslighter Dinner Theater downtown not a dance hall, but a great asset
Dear Editor,
This is in response to the article entitled, “Dance at Your Own Risk” published Oct. 1
It is an attempt to clarify The Gaslighter Dinner Theater’s presence in Downtown Gilroy.
It should be stated that we are not a dance hall. We are permitted as a theater and restaurant.
We never have shows at the theater whose sole purpose is for the audience to dance. We do not hold dances.
We have been working closely with the Gilroy Police Department and with Sgt. Kurt Ashley to insure that all of our shows stay within the confines of our permits. Early on in May of 2009, we had our first band music concert. It was not a dance!
To our knowledge, there were two arrests made that evening outside and off the premises of the Gaslighter. One was for graffiti tagging which happened down the street from the Gaslighter, and one was for urinating in public somewhere behind the Gaslighter in the alley. No arrests were made at the Gaslighter. There also was no illegal drinking at the Gaslighter.
Working in collaboration with the Gilroy Police there has been no problems or incidences since that one show.
What does the Gaslighter offer to the downtown of Gilroy?
The Gaslighter Theater is one of the longest running privately owned and operated theater companies in the nation. We have been providing family entertainment since 1959.
Gary Walton, a local real estate developer, who is key in the revitalization of downtown Gilroy, approached us in April of 2007 to reopen the Gaslighter Theater in its Gilroy location. The purpose was to bring people to a starving downtown. After going through an extensive permit process and review of the 12 years of our operation as the Gaslighter Theater, we officially reopened the same business in February, 2009, minus our previous dance hall permit. Wow, that was quick!
The Gaslighter Theater is an asset to the redevelopment of the downtown area. We offer live entertainment such as Theatrical Productions, Stand-Up Comedy Shows, and Musical Concerts. All of our shows are open to people of all ages including “The Gathering”, a non-denominational church service on Sunday evenings.
Our current theatrical show is, Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” a murder mystery. This show is the longest running play in history. It opened in London in 1952 and is still running. Professional comedians from places such as Comedy Central perform at the Gaslighter.
For young adults, we have bands like Gilroy’s own, “Five Minutes to Freedom” perform in a concert environment. Isn’t it great that young people have a place to go?
Recently, Grisha Goryachev, classified as on of the best, if not the best, Flemenco Guitarist in the world, performed at the Gaslighter. Yes, there is a place for quality world-class entertainment in downtown Gilroy.

Garlic milkshake could really do Congressman Honda some good
Dear Editor,
Our Congressman, Mike Honda, on Friday, Oct. 2 gave a basket of Gilroy Garlic to Republican Minority Leader, John Boehner.
Boehner had remarked that the public health care option being discussed nationally is “about as unpopular as a garlic milkshake.”
Kudos to Honda for promoting healthy, Gilroy garlic. Maybe if Mike would drink a garlic milkshake or take garlic in any form as a preventive health plan then we would not need Obamacare with a public option.

Pain management doctor: Do not approve a medical marijuana facility
Dear Editor,
I am a physician licensed to practice medicine in the state of California, and am board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord medicine, with two board certifications in pain medicine/pain management.
It has come to my understanding that the City of Gilroy intends to allow and approve the establishment of a medical marijuana center.
Let me just emphatically state for the record that I am diametrically opposed to having a medical marijuana clinic anywhere in the tri-counties.
I am an established and experienced physician who takes care of disabled patients due to an injury or due to chronic pain. I can authoritatively state that there is no justification for treatment of patient with chronic pain using medical marijuana, and that terminally ill patients can be well managed via the Hospice system.
Our fair city is notorious for being the Garlic Capital. Do we now want to be known as “Pot City”? This is not an intelligent way for the city to generate new revenue, and I can say that Gilroy might lose our much-needed clinic.
I beg the powers that be not to allow this clinic to open within our tri-county area.

If only the businesses downtown would stay open later some nights
Dear Editor,
There is no doubt that downtown Gilroy needs help but it’s hard to do business with our local merchants when the majority of shops close so early. You would think that the shops would stay open when we have an event downtown, but they don’t.
