Scorching weather was all the better to enjoy a little bit of brewski at the annual Cool Brews Festival at the community center in Morgan Hill on Saturday.

Craig Kennedy, chief operating officer of Coast Range Brewing Co. and his wife Chris stopped by the festival to support the guys from the brewery who were pouring beer. Craig and Chris heartily support the event to provide financial support to the community aquatics center. “We love the aquatics center. In fact, our daughter is swimming there right now,” Chris said.

Trying to keep their beer cool under the shade of a tree were Darren Jenkins and T.R. Smith. Jenkins apparently dug through his college t-shirts to find just the right one for the event. The shirt read, and I don’t directly quote, “BEER-helping ugly people have (fun) since 1862.” What a history lesson …

Hosting their annual Member’s Choice Award Show in the historical Community Playhouse, South Valley Civic Theatre supporters attended the black tie optional event decked out in show business fashion. Those theater people – nothing if not glamorous! All smiles were the nominees of this year’s show including Colleen Chipman. Chipman was nominated for best actress, director and set design – a new type of triple threat.

Whitney McClelland wore her directorial success well with a stunning feather wrap in honor of her show “HONK!” Zana Vartanian, costume designer for “HONK!” and Jamie Haskell mingled with the crowd of fellow performers and families active in the theater life of South County. Speaking of no family member left out, SVCT can count many all-family casts including the Mandel family and the Tom family. Larry Tom, a pilot for American Airlines and his wife Elizabeth, a flight attendant for American, both create schedules where they often step from the flight deck to the stage in a matter of minutes.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for … the Best Actress award goes to Sandi Lewandowski for her role as Ida in “HONK!” and Lane Grover received the Best Actor award for playing Ugly in “HONK!”

Congratulations performers and producers at South Valley Civic Theatre. The community looks forward to next year’s productions of “Count Dracula,” “Inspecting Carol,” “Company,” “Narnia” (directed by the exceedingly talented Carol Harris), and “Annie” (the sun will come out tomorrow and the next day, etc.). Whew! Count me in on one of those stage mothers trying to get their little girl in the title role.

Speaking of stage parents … Emerald Regime Band Boosters showed up in support of the Leadership Excellence Award winner, band leader Mike Rubino, at CordeValle Lodge Saturday night. Leadership graduates from 2005 Tracy Newquist and the very literate counsel, Stacy Camiel (we need to stop meeting like this) found the balmy evening perfect on the dining room patio overlooking the wildlife on the golf course. More American Airlines employees … pilot Larry Carr, and former employee Carol Spence Carr reminisced about the first flight of Larry Tom (see above). “He was so green,” says Carol of Larry Tom’s first flight on which Carol served as an attendant. Small world.

Local mouth doctor Robert Moulthrop, a former Emerald Regime drum major, emceed the event, introducing speakers. Ken Petro, a booster member during Rubino’s reign as director turned it into a fun, quasi-roast. Explaining how the boosters maintained their work ethic, “He sucked you into his vision. But it was fun.” Summarizing his leadership style during a taped interview, Rubino explained, “I ran it like I was a dictator.” His mission: “When we go out on the field, it’s going to be my way!” The score of that title song remained in the Regime’s repertoire for years.

Entertaining the heated crowd, another former drum major, Aaron Blas continued the roast. “True leadership can be summed up in two words, ‘great hair,'” referring to the Rubino’s lack of diminishing hairline. Blas continued, “One only has to look at Cricket (Rubino’s wife and former color guard director) to see how Mike appreciated talent.”

Mike, not being a man to toot his own horn – no, wait, he is a horn player – reminded the crowd of his famous composition “chocolate.” The ear worm melody has found a way into the district’s kids’ heads and has them screaming “get it out!” Thanks for the memories, Mike.

The generous bidding during the evening netted Morgan Hill Leadership $47,645.00.

Ciao for now.
