Gilroy’s public library will begin leasing a temporary site downtown on Dec. 15.
The City Council authorized a $336,874 lease payment Monday night to Gary and Jean Walton to use 7652 Monterey Road on an interim basis.
The council’s ad-hoc Library Review Committee discussed the proposed relocation site during its Sept. 10 meeting. The library will start moving into the building Dec. 15 and should be moved in by Jan. 29. Library officials have said the library will close Dec. 2 before reopening in January. The library will likely then be at this site for two years while a new, ecologically friendly library is built on the site of the current library, 7387 Rosanna St.
By paying the total lease up front in a lump sum, the city will get a lower total lease cost, according to city staff.
All costs of the library project will be covered by Measure F, a $37 million bond approved by voters in November 2008.
