New clinic to open

Valley Health Center Gilroy has its dedication 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. today, at 7475 Camino Arroyo.

This new clinic provides medical care to the South County area and has five times the patient capacity of the previous location in San Martin.

The 59,000 square-foot clinic opened Oct. 7, 2008. This clinic is the only one in the Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System to offer Family Practice doctors, providing care to all members of the family.

2008 Second Chance successful

The results are in from the 2008 run of Operation Second Chance, where those with warrants for their arrest had the entire month of December to avoid spending the holiday season in jail and turning themselves in and obtaining new court dates. A total of 479 people cleared their 553 warrants countywide. In 2007, only 201 people took advantage of this opportunity.

The Sheriff’s Office plans on continuing this program this December, according to a press release prepared by Sgt. Don Morrissey.

College grants no longer

The California Student Aid Commission let administrators know that Cal Grants could be replaced with registered warrants, or IOU’s, because of the state budget crisis. But, officials at Gavilan College said Wednesday the college would advance district funds to cover students who rely on Cal Grants to attend college.

This would cost the district $82,000, which would be paid back by the state when a budget plan is put into place.

About 275 students at Gavilan College will receive the grants for the spring semester. These grants are used toward purchasing textbooks and other necessities.
