SALINAS – Finding its groove midway through each half of Wednesday’s game against the Salinas Cowboys, Gilroy High’s girls soccer team returned home with a 2-0 victory to stay undefeated in the Tri-County Athletic League.

Gilroy’s Ariana Carrillo took a through ball from Indra Garcia in the 20th minute and slotted a shot into the net from the top of the box, and Ariana Vera sent a cross in the 60th minute to Savannah Silacci, who played the ball off her chest and into the goal for the margin of victory.

“Today I thought we started off the first five minutes a little flat,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “Then we turned it on. We controlled the tempo after the first goal.”

Playing a bit more creative than in past contests, Hernandez was pleased with the style of play his team showed.

“It was nice to see the girls take a few risks and have confidence in themselves,” he said.

The Mustangs are now 7-2-3 overall, 4-0 in the TCAL. They are now in a commanding position atop the league tables, as second-place Salinas dropped to 9-3, 3-2.

Gilroy’s next game will be Friday at 5 p.m. against visiting Alisal at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex. The game was originally scheduled to take place in Salinas but school administrators traded home dates to accommodate GHS finals schedules. The Mustangs will now travel to play the Trojans on Feb. 11.

“I didn’t want to play the last two games (of the season) on the road, (but) it’s the teacher’s hat,” Hernandez said. “We couldn’t have our [junior varsity] girls miss our two long blocks (of classes) before finals.”
