Known gang member escaped New Year’s Day

Police are searching for a 17-year-old who escaped from juvenile hall New Year’s Day.
Gerardo Chavez, who was in custody for assault with a deadly weapon with gang enhancements and awaiting trial at the time of his escape, police said. He is a known gang member and frequents the areas of King Road and Cunningham Avenue and Washington Street near Almaden Road in San Jose.
Chavez was last seen about 8:45 p.m. Thursday and is described as 5-feet, 5-inches tall, weighing 212 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and brown pants. Chavez has several tattoos, including the word “Chavez” on his neck in cursive writing.
It is believed that Chavez may have been aided in his escape by several family members, police said. Detectives have information that he was dropped off near the intersection of Tully Road and Monterey Road in San Jose shortly after his escape.
