Government-run health care: a disease that will strike all Americans

Dear Editor,

You know they have already lost when they have to lie to push their arguments. Chuck Flagg (letters, Aug. 24) claims that I said people who have been “laid off from their jobs should move to Canada.”

I said those like Flagg and Perkel who want the government to run their health care deserve to be forcibly deported to such a country, where they can enjoy rationed care (example, cancer if over 70 means you get to die of it) and a myriad of laws (example, mandatory helmets for bike riders and pads for roller skaters) passed in the name of “cost to taxpayers.”

They should be happy to get the free ticket. Flagg says the “other great nations treat their citizens more humanely” and “provide health care to all with better results.” What are they waiting for?

Oh, that’s right, once their (Democrat) party gets more people DEPENDENT on another handout, they have just bought more slaves! Their latest ploy is “government insurance.”

This sounds a lot like public education – perpetually short of cash, with those well-off enough to afford private coverage opting out. They cry about how much the insurance costs but refuse to limit the lawsuits that so drive it up – $2 million hot coffee, anyone?

Chuck: Which government entity do you want to run your health care, the feds, at $16 trillion in debt (and growing), or the state of California, which is bankrupt?

President Charlie Brown? Are Republicans toying with Obama?

Dear Editor,

President Charlie Brown? Is Obama being suckered by the Republicans the same way that was depicted in Charlie Brown comics? Lucy would hold the football and always promise that she wouldn’t jerk it away at the last minute. Poor Charlie Brown would run up to kick the ball and at the last second Lucy would jerk it away and Charlie Brown would fall on his butt.

When I hear Obama talking about a “bipartisan” health care reform package it makes me ask the question, “Is Obama really that stupid?”

He praises Republican Senator Grassley for his support while Grassley tells people to fear Obama’s death panels. What Obama doesn’t seem to grasp is that for Republicans, failure is the new success. Republicans want America to fail so they can claim that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans. I think it’s time for Obama to get tough and the Democrats to get smart.

Doesn’t deserve the astonishing compliments he gets from drivers

Dear Editor,

Perhaps you can explain why I keep getting unexpected compliments from riders on the road.

Many of them pay me the extraordinary compliment of my being able to read their mind. They assume I can tell when and where they’re going to change lanes or directions without putting on their turn signals. I wish they did NOT pay me such compliments: believe it or not, I’m not a mind reader.

When on the road I can only figure out what they intend to do on the basis of turn signals they properly execute. Am I overly modest?

‘Elvis’ and outdoor karaoke get an unfriendly ax, and it’s too darn bad

Dear Editor,

In a small town such as Gilroy, it is hard enough to make a go in the restaurant business.

One of the few bright spots of night life for the average Gilroyan has been my favorite restaurant, Victoria’s Mexican Restaurant on First Street. I have been eating there for over 20 years and find the food and service excellent.

As an added bonus, during summer Thursday nights, they have held karaoke outside on the patio MC’d by restaurant family member Donald “Elvis” Prieto. This year however, Victoria’s has had to contend with a less-than-friendly neighbor nearby. Now, I have also frequented that other store since they opened.

That is until I heard that they complained to Joe Gagliardi, the property manager, about the perceived interference to their business. The property manager managed to broker a compromise that the additional seating and crowd would not affect the other business. This seemed to quell the discontent of that business until Victoria’s accidentally violated the boundary recently by a couple of feet.

That infraction triggered another call to the property manager who quashed the outdoor karaoke permanently for fear the other tenant could be using the issue to cancel their long-term lease. I understand Mr. Gagliardi’s position and realize he had no choice, but I do.

What the neighboring business failed to do was be a good neighbor and also realize that the outdoor event might have actually brought more business to him from people who never knew they existed. They could have even used Victoria’s event to bring added business to them. For now and until the other business rescinds their silly feud, I will take my business elsewhere.
