VANCOUVER, Wash. – Continuing to pull off victories in dramatic fashion, Gilroy Little League’s Girls Majors All-Stars defeated Oregon’s All-Stars (Klamath Falls) 4-3 in a first-round extra-inning contest Sunday.

The game marked the beginning of pool play at the Western Regional Tournament (District 4) in Vancouver, Washington, where the winner of the 10-team tournament will earn a trip to the Little League Softball World Series.

Trailing early in the contest, Gilroy managed to tie the game twice before breaking the game open in an extra seventh inning. Tied 3-all, Gilroy’s MacKenzie Mitchell singled to start the charge but was thrown out at third base on a base hit by Lauren Castro. Holly Lam walked, putting runners on first and second. Nicole Green stepped to the plate and ended the game with a hit to the gap in left-center field, plating Castro for the winning run.

It is the second win in a row in extra innings for Gilroy, which needed 11 frames to get past Red Bluff last week in the Northern California Division II championship.

Oregon got on the board first in Sunday’s contest with a run in the top of the second.

A single by Gilroy’s Karli Martinez, followed by a walk by Dejah Raoof, set up Mitchell, who delivered a game-tying run with a single to center.

Oregon took the lead in the fifth, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead, but Gilroy again responded in the bottom half of the frame.

Alli Hathaway led off with a double to left field and Martinez drove her in with a single to right. Mitchell came through with her second RBI of the game by knocking a hard single to left-center, tying the score at 3-all. For the game, Mitchell had three hits.

Oregon tried to take the its third lead of the game in the sixth, moving runners to second and third, but Gilroy’s Lam coaxed a comebacker to get the final out of the inning. Lam finished the contest with 11 strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

Gilroy churned out 11 hits in the game total to head into Monday night’s contest against the host team – Vancouver, Wash. – at 1-0 in the tournament. Results form that contest were unavailable as of press time.

The top four teams from pool play, which will conclude Friday, advance to semifinal contests to be played Saturday. The winners of those two contests would advance to play in Saturday’s single-game championship.
