Gilroy – City officials have agreed to convert a neighborhood intersection into an all-way stop after more than 50 residents submitted a petition supporting the change.
Under a plan approved by City Council Monday night, the intersection of Santa Paula Drive and San Miguel Street, just east of El Roble Elementary School, will change over to a four-way stop.
The intersection currently has two stop signs for traffic moving along the east-west path of San Miguel Street.
A city traffic study revealed that about 300 cars use San Miguel each day, while double that amount use Santa Paula.
“Right now the stop signs are on the low-volume approach,” City Transportation Engineer Don Dey explained. “We needed to do something to balance it out. … It really is safer in our opinion to have a four-way stop there instead of two.”
Officials also are recommending additional ways to improve driver visibility for those approaching the intersection, and greater police surveillance to control speeding in the area, which has a posted limit of 25 miles per hour.
Dey expected the new stop signs to be installed within 30 days.
