GILROY – Gilroy boys’ volleyball setter Greg Calimpong came one assist short of his career high Thursday, handing out 48 assists total in a five-set victory over visiting Monterey (29-27, 22-25, 18-25, 25-13, 15-10).

Calimpong helped Thomas Costa, Etay Haramaty, Sam Howard and Alfred Medenceles all go above 10 kills in the game, while Nico Sandoval led five GHS players who eclisped 10 digs with 18.

The win, viewed as crucial by GHS coach Scott Martin due to an especially tight race in the Tri-County Athletic League this season, puts the Mustangs (15-4, 7-1 TCAL) on a collision course with rival San Benito (17-7, 8-0) for a share of first place on Tuesday, April 28. Only the top two teams from the TCAL are guaranteed a berth into the playoffs, placing any team outside of those spots at risky of missing the postseason. The Mustangs play at Alisal (1-22, 0-8) tonight at 6:30 p.m.
