GILROY – Giving up seven runs before even recording an out in the first inning Monday, Gilroy High baseball could have closed up shop and called it a day.

Instead, the Mustangs kept their cool.

Freshman pitcher Brent Newton was roughed up by Monta Vista in his first career start for GHS and was forced to hand the ball over to Angel Gamboa with no outs in the bottom of the first. The junior reliever got the Mustangs into the second inning without allowing another run, giving Gilroy the opportunity to mount a comeback en route to a 20-11 blowout victory. Gamboa earned the win on the hill.

“The good thing is our kids didn’t panic and we gad seven innings to score,” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said.

Three stellar offensive innings was all it took. The Mustangs scored five in the second frame, eight in the fourth and seven in the seventh to hold an 18-12 advantage in hits by the time the game was complete.

Jose Gamboa and Rafael Garcia both hit grand slams, and Eric Vegas had three hits, one of which was a home run.

“We had a number of guys with one to two hits,” Wheeler added.

A late change in the schedule was made this week, moving up Thursday’s contest against Saratoga to today at 3:30 p.m. Assuming the wet weather subsides, which Wheeler said he is optimistic it will, the game will be played at Saratoga rather than PAL Stadium in San Jose.
