GILROY – A defensive battle between the junior varsity Gilroy High and Christopher High field hockey teams entertained an enthusiastic crowd Tuesday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex, but the Mustangs finished on top with a narrow 1-0 win.

Mustangs forward Elvira Pineda-Echeverria broke the 0-0 deadlock midway through the second half, finishing a 2-on-1 breakaway after receiving a crisp pass from Savanah McGovern for what turned out to be the game winning goal.

“This is so exciting,” said Mustangs coach Jo Thomas after the game with a big smile. “I’m excited we won our first game.”

The defensive struggle didn’t lack shots by either offense, and the goalies for both teams were busy throughout turning shots aside left and right.

The Cougars used two goalies, Maddie Peterson in the first half and Danielle Dias in the second. Each had their fair share of work in net.

“Both of my goalies played really well…they were awesome,” Cougars coach Stacey Myers said. “Both of them having never played goalie before, they are doing great, and I can’t wait to see how they play the rest of the season.”

Mustangs goalie Jessica Gonzales survived a number of Cougars short corners late in the game to solidify the shutout.
