An early morning police in Gilroy led to the shutdown of Highway 101 Saturday when the suspects reportedly crashed through a fence and into at least three vehicles, police reported.
Six people, including two suspects were transported to hospitals and closed the freeway in both directions for hours following the incident, which started shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday
The four others were transported with minor to moderate injuries. None were listed as life threatening, according to police.
Southbound 101 remained closed as of 1 p.m.
According to Gilroy police, an officer spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of Chestnut and 8th streets in Gilroy just before 3 a.m.. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, GPD reports that the suspect car attempted to flee.
The suspect reportedly crashed into a tree in the area of Chestnut and 10th Street and continued to drive down 9th street at which time Gilroy Police say they ended the pursuit.
A short time later, officers received reports that a vehicle matching the description of the suspect crashed through a fence at the end of 9th street and entered Highway 101 and crashed into at least three vehicles.
Two suspects were found out of the vehicle and Gilroy Police report a witness claims one of the suspects was struck by an oncoming car.
According to police, one suspect is reportedly in critical condition while the second is in serious condition.
The identities of the suspects have not been released by police.
Police also are investigating whether there were more occupants in the suspect vehicle.
Northbound 101 was reopened after 10 a.m. and police report the southbound side may reopen between 2 and 3 p.m. CHP and Caltrans websites do not list 101 as being closed as of 2:15 p.m. Saturday.
Gilroy Police report the investigation is on going.
