Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District Board backpedalled from releasing a statement about the legal opinion the district’s lawyer formed regarding teacher participation in demonstrations like the Day of Silence during class time.

During the school board meeting May 5, board president TJ Owens promised a public statement would be available Monday “at the very latest.”

One day after the deadline, a statement from the board is still unavailable.

The board met Monday night to discuss the future release of a statement that would probably include recommendations the legal council made to the district.

“I don’t know what to tell you. We still don’t have a statement,” Owens said Tuesday. “We discussed this last night – and we’re not ready yet.”

According to Owens, the board is still waiting to hear additional advice from the council before they assemble a statement. He refrained from providing another date when a board statement would be available.

The Day of Silence demonstration urges participants to remain silent for one day to symbolize the oppression homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual individuals feel every day.
