Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said Thursday he is continuing to work toward securing a fight for Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“I’m trying to see if I can fulfill Robert’s dream,” Schaefer said.
Social media erupted Thursday with rumors that Guerrero-Mayweather is a done deal, but Schaefer said that wasn’t the case.
“I think I would know,” said Schaefer, who added that an official announcement will be made likely in the first week to 10 days of January.
Phone messages left Thursday afternoon with Luis DeCubas, Guerrero’s co-manager, and Mario Serrano, Guerrero’s publicist, were not immediately returned.
Mayweather’s next fight will be May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In addition to Guerrero, the other opponent reportedly under consideration is WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) reportedly is eyeing May 4 and Sept. 14 as the two dates he intends to fight in 2013.
Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) retained his interim WBC welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Andre Berto on Nov. 24 in Ontario, Calif., and has sought a fight against Mayweather since.
“He made it clear to us he wants to fight the best, and the best is Floyd,” Schaefer said.
