Epifania Vera, a native of Walden, Texas, died Monday May 2, 2005 after a short bout with cancer. She left this world surrounded by loving family members at the Gilroy home of eldest daughter Cruz Rodriguez and family.
Mrs. Vera and her late husband Samuel Vera left Texas about 1949, and after stops in Arizona, New Mexico and California, eventually settled in Gilroy about 1951.
In spite of very little formal education, the Veras became active in farming and later merchandising for themselves. The couple bought into the American dream of purchasing their own home in 1972.
Her passing marks the end of a generation of the Vera family that includes daughters, Cruz Rodriguez (Ed), Mary Martinez (Ruben), and Martha Vera; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe (Blanca), John Manuel (Sharon), Raul (deceased) (Josie), Joseph, Ruben, and David (Sally). Also surviving are brothers, Jesus Delagarza (Natalia) of Santa Ana, and sisters Maria, Nena, and Juanita, all of Mexico; grandchildren Joy, Troy, Valentin, Benjamin, Ruben, Daniel, Ray, Ricky, Raul and David Vera. Also Samuel Stephen Vera Rodriguez, Natalie Martinez, Gloria and Lily Vera, also several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
