It’s hard to believe the end of the winter sports season is already here. This is the final week of the regular season – some teams are playing their final two games before folding up the 2011-12 tent, and some have the playoffs to look forward to.
Christopher High crowned two league champions last week – the wrestling team and its 6-0 Monterey Bay League dual meet record, and the girls basketball team, which stormed through the MBL at 11-1. Add those banner to the one the football team earned and that’s three league titles so far this school year. And from what I’ve heard, the softball team will be a force to be reckoned with as well.
Coach Alecxis Lara’s grapplers have the league meet Saturday at Seaside, where berths into the Central Coast Section championship meet are up for grabs. Heather Stewart’s Cougars take the court Thursday in the semifinals of the MBL postseason tournament. (Time and opponent to be determined.) They find out where they land in the CCS brackets Sunday. Speaking of the Cougars, junior Hanna Tabron reached the 1,000-point plateau for her career, Stewart said. That number is not official, because it includes one year at the junior varsity level. However, Tabron, who has 415 points this season with at least two more games to go, and 774 in two varsity years, will break the 1,000 point varsity total next season. Either way, that’s a lot of points.
Not to be outdone or overlooked, the CHS girls soccer team is playing for first place today against Watsonville at 3 p.m. in Gilroy. A win clinches a share of the crown. A loss isn’t devastating, though. The Cougars have already punched a ticket into sectionals.
The Gilroy High girls soccer team can secure its sixth consecutive Tri-County Athletic League title with two wins this week. The big one is Friday against Salinas at 5:15 in Gilroy. It’s a winner-take-all situation on Senior Night in the season finale. Need I say more?
On the boys’ side, head coach Armando Padilla has guided a young Mustangs squad to the brink of another postseason appearance. GHS is on a three-game winning streak with two to play. A couple more wins guarantee the Mustangs a spot.
The GHS wrestling team will go through the formalities of the TCAL championships Saturday. There is a solid chance that GHS will qualify its entire team to CCS, where it will vie for its 10th straight section title.
Soccer and hoops CCS rounds one and two kick off next week. Stay tuned Monday for seeding, location and times for the locals.
